Question: What do the "numbers" mean in snow boarding?

I'm watching the Olympics, the halfpipe event, and the commentators are saying they are doing a "540 " or a "720. " What do the numbers refer to? What makes a trick a "540 " or "720 "?

It is degrees of a circle, 360 being a complete circle (they spun around one complete circle or 360 degrees between their starting position and landing position). 540 - 1 1/ 2 spins in the air. 720 - 2 spins in the air.

I'm pretty sure (might be wrong though) that its how far the snowboarder is spinning. Just like a 360 spin is a full circle.
